You’ve probably heard that crossword puzzles and sudoku “keep your brain sharp.” I’m going to tell you something that might be uncomfortable: they mostly don’t. Not the way you’ve been led to believe.
I’m not a neuroscientist. I’m a trainer who’s spent 40-plus years watching what actually changes people’s bodies and minds, and I’ve paid close attention to the research on this because memory loss scares people more than almost anything else about getting older. What the science actually shows is more hopeful than a crossword puzzle, and it’s also more demanding. Your brain doesn’t want familiar. It wants new.
I hear the same fear from clients over and over: “I walk into a room and forget why I’m there.” “I lose the word that was right on the tip of my tongue.” Most of the time, that’s normal aging, not the beginning of something serious. But the fear it creates is real, and it often pushes people toward the wrong solution — passive brain games — instead of the one that actually has evidence behind it.
The Study That Changed How We Think About “Keeping Sharp”
In one of the more compelling studies on this, researchers at the University of Texas at Dallas ran what’s now known as the Synapse Project. They took 221 older adults, ages 60 to 90, and split them into groups. Some learned genuinely new, difficult skills — digital photography or quilting on computerized machines — for about 15 hours a week over three months. Others did familiar, low-challenge activities like socializing or simple puzzles at home.
Only the group learning something demanding and unfamiliar — photography or quilting — showed real improvements in memory, with some of those gains lasting up to a year later. The low-challenge group, doing the puzzle-style activities you’d expect to help, showed no measurable cognitive gains at all.
That result matters because it overturns the assumption most people carry into their 60s and 70s: that any mental activity counts as “brain exercise.” It doesn’t. Comfortable, repetitive activity doesn’t ask enough of your brain to change it. New, effortful, slightly frustrating learning does.
What made the Synapse Project’s design so useful is that it directly compared “new and hard” against “familiar and social.” The socializing group wasn’t sitting around doing nothing — they were meeting regularly, staying engaged, doing puzzles together. And they still showed no measurable memory gains. That tells you something important: it’s not mental activity in general that protects your memory. It’s the specific demand of learning something you don’t already know how to do.

Why Difficulty Is the Whole Point
Here’s the part that trips people up: if a mental activity feels easy, it’s probably not doing much for you anymore. Your brain adapts fast. The first time you tried sudoku, it was hard. By your two-hundredth puzzle, your brain has essentially automated it — and automated activity doesn’t build new neural connections the way a genuinely unfamiliar task does.
This lines up with what researchers understand about brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF — a protein that supports the growth and survival of neurons and is central to how your brain physically adapts to new demands. Research reviewed by Harvard Health on neuroplasticity in aging points to the same conclusion: novelty and sustained effort, not passive repetition, are what drive the brain’s ability to reorganize and strengthen itself later in life.
More recent research backs this up specifically around learning something as demanding as a new language. A 2025 review of neuroimaging studies found that older adults who took up new language learning showed measurable improvements in cognitive control — including on tasks that measure attention and mental flexibility — along with functional changes in brain regions tied to working memory and executive function. This wasn’t a supplement or a lifestyle tweak. It was the act of grappling with something genuinely new and hard.
None of this means you need to become fluent in Italian or produce gallery-worthy photography. The point isn’t mastery. It’s the sustained stretch of trying to do something you currently can’t do well. That stretch is what your brain responds to, whether it’s a new skill, a new language, or a new physical movement pattern you’ve never attempted before.
Your brain doesn’t get old and stop changing. It gets old because you stop asking it to.
What “New and Hard” Actually Looks Like for You
You don’t need to learn photography or a new language to benefit from this — though both work well. What matters is picking something that meets three conditions: it’s unfamiliar to you, it requires sustained attention over weeks or months, and it has room to keep getting harder as you improve.
Good options include:
- Learning an instrument you’ve never played before
- Picking up a new language with an app, a class, or a conversation group
- Learning to paint, draw, or work with a new craft medium
- Taking up woodworking, quilting, or another hands-on skill with real technique to master
- Learning a new physical skill like tai chi, pickleball, or ballroom dancing, where your brain has to build new movement patterns alongside new social interaction
Notice what’s not on that list: crossword puzzles, sudoku, and brain-training apps. They’re not harmful, and they can be enjoyable, but the research is fairly consistent that once they become familiar, they stop challenging your brain in the way that drives real change. If you love them, keep doing them for the fun of it — just don’t count on them alone to protect your memory.
The best options tend to share a few traits: they have a clear path to get harder over time, they give you feedback on how you’re doing, and ideally they involve other people. Group classes work especially well because they add social accountability on top of the cognitive challenge — you show up because someone’s expecting you, which solves the motivation problem before it even starts.

Start Before You Feel Ready
I know the instinct when something feels hard and unfamiliar is to wait until you feel more motivated, more confident, or less busy. I’ll tell you the same thing I’ve told hundreds of clients walking into a gym for the first time in years: motivation isn’t going to show up first. It shows up after you start.
Pick one thing — one class, one instrument, one language app, one craft — and commit to showing up consistently for a month before you judge whether it’s “working.” The frustration you feel in week one, when everything feels clumsy and slow, isn’t a sign you’re bad at it. It’s a sign your brain is doing exactly what it needs to do.
This is the same principle that got me back into training after years away from it dealing with shoulder arthritis and torn rotator cuffs. When I came back to lifting in my 60s after losing years of muscle to sarcopenia, I didn’t feel ready. I felt stiff, weak, and honestly a little embarrassed at how much I’d lost. I started anyway, using pain-free angles that worked around the damage instead of fighting through it. The confidence came after I started, not before. Learning a new skill at 60, 70, or 80 works the same way — the clumsiness you feel in the first few sessions is the price of admission, not a sign you picked the wrong thing.
The only way to start when you’re not motivated is to do it anyway. Your brain rewards the same approach your body does — new demands, applied consistently, even when it’s uncomfortable. And just like physical training, the plateau eventually breaks. The frustrating first weeks of fumbling through a new language or a new instrument give way to visible progress, usually faster than people expect once they push through the initial discomfort.
